Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that typically affects the knees, hips and hands, affecting approximately 240 million people worldwide.
Osteoarthritis of the knee is characterized by chronic joint pain and functional disability. The incidence of osteoarthritis increases with age and is often associated with comorbidities; almost 30% of people over 45 years of age have signs of knee osteoarthritis.
Symptoms of osteoarthritis develop slowly and gradually increase over time.
– Pain at the beginning of walking, “starting” pain in large joints. During physical activity, the pain increases at the end of the day.
– Swelling of the joints associated with their overload. Knee joints are more often affected.
– Morning stiffness in the joints of the hands for up to 5-10 minutes during prolonged rest, after sleep.
– With age, more often in women after 40 years, dense formations in the form of nodules appear in the area of interphalangeal joints of the hands.
– Crunching in the joints when moving.
Identification of early stages of knee OA and modifiable risk factors is crucial to improve clinical decision-making and provide effective prevention strategies.
