STRESS – a state of psychological and physical tension in response to external influences. Difficult situations, monotonous activities and emotional factors can cause it. Stress helps to adapt to a changing environment, but can cause negative health consequences.
Without a shadow of a doubt, we can be sure that every Ukrainian is currently feeling stressed and trying to adapt to the current realities of life.
And although we know for sure that our victory will come soon, now we need to support not only the country, but also our health, including protecting ourselves from the negative effects of stress.
❓ WHAT HAPPENS IN THE BODY DURING STRESS?
The alarm signal originates in the cerebral cortex and is transmitted to the hypothalamus. A hormone that affects the pituitary gland is synthesized there. It stimulates the adrenal glands, which release adrenaline and cortisol into the blood. Because of adrenaline, the heart beats more often, the pressure rises, energy consumption increases. Because of cortisol, there is more sugar in the blood, the brain uses glucose more actively, and the functioning of the digestive and reproductive systems is inhibited, which prevents it from fighting back the threat. When the danger has passed, hormone levels return to normal. Digestion and other processes begin to work normally again.
In general, such a small “shock” is even useful. It makes us more resilient and ready for serious dangers. Everyone is familiar with such “good” stress: when you play sports games, participate in competitions, speak in public, feelings are inevitable, but they quickly end and you feel great again.
But when stress lasts for a long time, the body is constantly in a state of tension. The adrenal glands “get tired” and stop producing enough cortisol. Many of us are familiar with the symptoms of this condition.
These include dizziness, constant fatigue, cravings for salty and sweet foods, sleep disturbances, decreased sex drive, mood swings, and autoimmune conditions.
As a result, there comes a point when any system can begin to fail. This applies to the reproductive, endocrine, and nervous systems, etc.

A number of diseases are associated with stress: diabetes, anxiety disorder, depression, high blood pressure, diseases of the heart and blood vessels, decreased immunity, decreased libido and sexual dysfunction, and many others.

There are a number of practices and tips for dealing with stress. Classic tips include the following steps:
- find the cause of stress – independently or with a psychologist
- establish a regime of full sleep (7-8 hours a day),
- include regular physical activity in your daily routine,
- practice relaxation skills – this can be creativity, meditation, yoga, walks, depending on what personally helps you to distract yourself,
- rest more often and spend time in the fresh air, it is best to include these two items in your daily routine and make time for them,
- share your problems and experiences with loved ones.
