Citicoline is a natural drug that is a chemical compound of cytidine and choline. The mechanism of action of the drug is to stimulate the biosynthesis of structural phospholipids of neuronal membranes, inhibit phospholipases, which prevents excessive formation of free radicals, and also prevents apoptosis of nervous system cells. Citicoline is also a donor of choline, which is used by nervous system cells for synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine and phosphatidylcholine, and its use in diseases of the central nervous system ensures sufficient synthesis of acetylcholine from citicoline and prevents damage to neuronal membranes associated with the release of phosphatidylcholine from cell membranes and its catabolism to choline with its subsequent use for acetylcholine synthesis. Citicoline increases the synthesis of sphingomyelin and cardiolipin, which is an integral part of the inner membrane of mitochondria. In stroke, citicoline has the ability to limit the size of the brain lesion area, prevent reperfusion disorders and improve neuronal repair. According to some scientific studies, the neuroprotective effect of the drug is due to the redistribution of one of the neurotransmitters glutamate to the lipid rafts of neurons, which promotes rapid absorption of glutamate and accelerates its removal from synaptic clefts, which prevents its accumulation in synaptic clefts and the possibility of toxic complications due to this phenomenon. Citicoline also stimulates neoangiogenesis by affecting its regulatory pathways, including ERK-1 and insulin receptor substrate-1, enhances neurogenesis and gliogenesis, increases synaptogenesis, and affects the modulation of neurotransmitters. Citicoline has a reparative effect not only in strokes, but also in brain and spinal cord injuries, as well as in brain damage caused by alcoholism. Citicoline also increases the release of dopamine, which helps to improve memory and other cognitive functions of the body. Citicoline also prevents the accumulation of beta-amyloid in nerve cells, which prevents the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Ingredients

active ingredient citicoline; 1 ampoule (4 ml) of the drug contains citicoline 500 mg or 1000 mg; excipients: concentrated hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide, water for injection.

Indications

– Stroke, acute phase of cerebrovascular disorders and treatment of complications and consequences of cerebrovascular disorders.

– Traumatic brain injury and its neurological consequences.

– Cognitive and behavioral disorders due to chronic vascular and degenerative cerebral disorders.

Dosing and administration

The recommended dose for adults is 500 mg to 2000 mg per day, depending on the severity of symptoms.

The medicine is intended for intramuscular or intravenous administration. Intravenously, the drug can be administered slowly by injection (over 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the dose administered) or by drip (the rate of administration is 40 to 60 drops per minute).

The duration of treatment depends on the course of the disease and is determined by the physician.

Elderly patients do not require dose adjustment.

The solution for injection is intended for single use only. The drug should be used immediately after opening the ampoule. Any residue of the drug must be destroyed. The medicine can be mixed with all isotonic solutions for intravenous administration, as well as with hypertonic glucose solution.

Storage conditions

Store in the original packaging at a temperature not exceeding 25 °C. Keep out of the reach of children.
